"REST"

Guys, do you ever feel pressure???

  • The pressure of significance…
  • The pressure of acceptance…
  • The pressure of marriage…
  • The pressure of kids…
  • The pressure of marriage… 🙂
  • The pressure of work-related relationships…
  • The pressure of closing the deal/competition…
  • The pressure of finances…
  • The pressure of marriage… 🙂
  • The pressure of spiritual growth…
  • The pressure of the commute…
  • The pressure of schedules…
  • The pressure of mental health…
  • The pressure of marriage… 🙂
  • The pressure of temptation…
  • The pressure of sin…
  • The pressure of secrets…
  • The pressure of marriage… 🙂

Q - What area do you feel the most pressure in?

We live such pressure-packed lives…and…they're not going away. What's a man to do? There isn’t an exhaustive list of the things men turn to, to escape the pressures of life - even if for a little while… But…we all know these temporary fixes do not last or work!  

The Bible talks about sabbath for us a REST from the pressures of life.  

READ - Genesis 2:1-3 (NLT)

1  So the creation of the heavens and the earth and everything in them was completed.

2  On the seventh day God had finished his work of creation, so he rested from all his work.

3  And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because it was the day when he rested from all his work of creation.

READ - Exodus 20:8-10 (NLT)

8 “Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.

9 You have six days each week for your ordinary work,

10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the LORD your God. On that day no one in your household may do any work. This includes you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, your livestock, and any foreigners living among you. 

READ - Hebrews 4:9-11 (NLT)

9  So there is a special rest still waiting for the people of God.

10  For all who have entered into God’s rest have rested from their labors, just as God did after creating the world.

11  So let us do our best to enter that rest. But if we disobey God, as the people of Israel did, we will fall.

In every area of our lives, we need REST!

  • Physical Rest
  • Spiritual Rest
  • Mental Rest
  • Emotional Rest
  • Relational Rest

We live in such a pressure-filled life that often we bounce around from pressure to pressure without rest. So much so that we even teach our kids to live that way by the example of our lives.

 
Let's use the acrostic of REST to help us find that sabbath:

R: Rest

E: Eat

S: Stop

T: Together

 

R: Rest

READ - Exodus 18:17-18 (NLT)

17  “This is not good!” Moses’ father-in-law exclaimed.

18  “You’re going to wear yourself out—and the people, too. This job is too heavy a burden for you to handle all by yourself.

READ - Mark 6:30-31 (NLT)

30  The apostles returned to Jesus from their ministry tour and told him all they had done and taught.

31  Then Jesus said, “Let’s go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest awhile.” He said this because there were so many people coming and going that Jesus and his apostles didn’t even have time to eat.  

READ - Matthew 11:28-30 (NLT)

28  Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.

29  Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

30  For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”  

READ - Isaiah 40:28-31 (NLT)

28 Have you never heard? Have you never understood? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth. He never grows weak or weary. No one can measure the depths of his understanding.

29 He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless.

30 Even youths will become weak and tired, and young men will fall in exhaustion.

31 But those who trust in the LORD will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint. 

Often we only get rest because we push ourselves so hard that we have to. It’s not self-care, it is emergency care.

Q – Do you think you rest well? Why or Why not?

Q – What things can you do to physically rest better?

E: Eat 

What is your spiritual diet? Is there anything you're eating right now that is causing you to stress unnecessarily or lack true rest? What are you feeding your soul/

READ - Matthew 4:4 (NLT)

4  But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

 

READ - John 6:35 (NLT)

35  Jesus replied, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

 

Develop a spiritual diet for your lives that you can actually stay on:

  • Bible (listen to it in your car, while working out/jogging)
  • Prayer (anytime/anyplace)
  • Small Group

Develop a relationship (or use Re:gen) to keep you accountable.

Q – What are the junk things you are feeding your soul right now that you can cut back on?

 

S: Stop

 

Many times, in life you have to stop something good to start something better. It’s about our priorities. We need to be teaching that its ok to do nothing sometimes. We don’t have to fill every moment with something.

 

READ - Matthew 6:31-33 (NLT)

31  “So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’

32  These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs.

33  Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.

 

Q - What do you need to stop?

Q - What do you need to start?

 

T: Time

 

All of this requires time:

You have to take time to rest.

You have to take time to eat.

You have to take time to stop.

 

None of this just happens on its own. You have to make a priority of making time for the right things, because Dads this world is against you.

 

The enemy uses media to entice you with images and then destroys you with them.

The enemy uses money to entice you with more only to leave you empty.

The enemy uses the thought of power to entice you only to leave you a shell of a man.

 

If it's not the enemy, the normal pressures of life can weigh us down, beat us up, and leave us wondering; "what's this all about anyway".

 

The only healthy way out is to take advantage of the Sabbath Jesus brings - it's time to REST!
