Week 3 Homework
1 Corinthians is a letter written by the Apostle Paul to the believers of a city called Corinth. Corinth was a port city so lots of ideas and customs from all over the world came to them. The city became known for all of its temples to worship various gods and religious ideas. The Christians there were experiencing divisions, distractions, and self-motivated ideas for God’s gifts and calling. 1 Corinthians 12 tells them that God’s gifts to believers are for the purpose of building others up in their faith - don’t lose sight of that truth.

Points to Ponder:
The ultimate role of the Holy Spirit is to exalt Jesus as Lord. Whatever takes away from that is not spiritual.
Diversity of gifts, but one God, one Spirit and one Lord.
This is a key verse. Gifts are given to build up others, not primarily for the benefit of the individual.
Verses 8-10 (Paul’s first list of spiritual gifts)
Message of wisdom - helping others understand the mind of God
Message of knowledge - similar to the message of wisdom might best be known as inspired teaching
Faith - a supernatural conviction that God will “move mountains”
Gifts of healing - healing of physical bodies through the Spirit
Miraculous powers - all other kinds of God works besides physical healings
Prophecy - Spirit inspired intelligible messages to build up others
Distinguishing between spirits - context here seems to indicate that this is the ability to tell whether something is from God or not
Different kinds of tongues - speech unintelligible to the speaker that proclaims the mysteries of God
Interpretation of tongues - to put into understandable words the tongues message
We are all one (after the same goal) but have been given different gifts to help us all get to that goal. We all have different ways to help each other along the journey.
There shouldn’t be division in the body of Christ. There needs to be equal concern for all because all are important.
Verse 28 (Another list of gifts - only different gifts from previous list addressed)
Apostle - those sent by Christ to preach the Gospel
Able to help others - ministering to the physical and spiritual needs of the community
Administration - can give guidance to others
The implied answer here is “no”.
Desire greater ways to serve and build up others.
