Take a few minutes to check in with everyone in your group.
John mentioned the death of Billy Graham from this past week. When people look back on the life you have lived, what are the things you want to be remembered for?

READ: Matthew 4:1-10 (NLT)

Temptation definition for this time: The elaborate traps used by the enemy to entice us to decide disobedience over obedience to God.

READ: Hebrews 4:12 (NLT)

ENGAGE: Jesus uses the word of God to combat temptation. Are you currently using the word of God to guide your life and combat temptation? What does that look like on a weekly basis for you?

ENGAGE: Encourage your group to start memorizing scripture together. Start this week with Hebrews 4:12 and create a plan for how you will each memorize this verse this week.

1. The trap of desire.

READ: Matthew 4:3 (NLT)
READ: James 1:13-14 (NLT)

ENGAGE: The enemy knows our weakness. How has the enemy tempted you through desire in the last month or the last week even?

ENGAGE: What is the part of you that the enemy seeks because he knows it’s a weakness for you? What are the ways you are guarding yourself or plan to guard yourself from these temptations?

2. The trap of possibility/ adventure.

READ: Matthew 4:6a (NLT)
READ: James 1:14-15 (NLT)
READ: John 10:10 (NLT)

ENGAGE: What are some of the ways you have been tempted through the trap of adventure in the past year? In what ways have you desired something your friend or neighbor has or the life they are living over your reality?

ENGAGE: Describe the last time you walked down the course of temptation and it lead to destruction in your life?

3. The trap of satisfaction.

READ: Matthew 4:8-9a (NLT)
READ: Genesis 3:1-7 (NLT)

ENGAGE: Sin may look really good, and may take you a little further for a short while, but always leads to death. When it comes to temptation, who do you turn to for wise advice and guidance?

ENGAGE: Adam and Eve covered their sin right after it happened. Is there anything you are covering and keep hidden because of guilt or shame?

Take a moment to allow for confession time within your group. Have everyone write their sin down on a sheet of paper. Jesus covers us because he hasn’t had to worry about covering himself. He is our cover. Cover the written sins with a while wash cloth and pray over your group. Pray that each person in your group will be released from the chains of their sins, that they would confess them to someone, and that your group will continue to love everyone in their group through sin, but will also keep them accountable to obedience to God.

Take prayer request from your group and split into smaller groups to pray with each other.
